Our take on Relapse

The battle system gives players clear information about companion actions but only a partial view of enemy plans. That information gap makes each turn a risk calculation, while effects that persist between battles add pressure beyond the current encounter.

What is Relapse?

Relapse is a 3D deck-building roguelike with turn-based battles and a map split into 3 acts.

On a turn, draw ability cards and spend action points to play them before starting the battle phase. Companions' actions are visible, while enemy actions are only partly revealed. As the route changes, environmental events affect which path to take, and negative effects carry over between fights. Battles award experience for a chosen class, loot, and abilities. Cards can be leveled up to 3 levels or enchanted with different abilities. The game includes 5 decks, 5 classes, over 240 cards, over 100 trinkets, 90 enemies, and more than 15 companions. Runs also offer unlockable cosmetics, familiars, starting abilities, starting trinkets, and permanent talent upgrades.

How Relapse plays

01Changing map events
Events occur as the map is traversed and can affect route choices.
02Persistent battle effects
Negative effects remain after a fight, carrying their impact into later battles.
03Card upgrades
Cards have 3 levels, and enchantments can add different abilities.
04Companion actions
Companions can be summoned, and their upcoming actions are visible during combat.

Relapse compared to similar games

Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat and deck-building, but centers on positioning, attack tiles, and timing attacks before a boss fight. Relapse instead has action-point card turns, companions, and a route through a three-act campaign with changing map events.
