Our take on Red Matter 2
Players who expect combat to drive the campaign may hit a wall when exploration and environmental puzzles take center stage; combat is described as occasional. Those who want horror built around jump scares may also find the eerie, non-jump-scare approach less suited to them.
What is Red Matter 2?
Red Matter 2 is a single-player virtual reality puzzle campaign set during an authoritarian Cold War that extends throughout the solar system.
Players take the role of Sasha Riss, tracing a friend’s distress call across Volgravian sites and uncovering concealed experiments. Motion controllers let players pick up and examine items, interpret scanned documents, fix equipment, and break into security systems. Puzzles draw on physical interactions, observation, and reasoning. A jetpack carries Sasha through areas with reduced gravity; other sequences call for avoiding security or occasional combat.
The campaign emphasizes exploration, story, and an unsettling atmosphere without jump scares. Movement choices include continuous motion, teleportation, and snap turns. The opening catches new players up on the story. On PC, the game features 4K textures, detailed geometry, dynamic and indirect shadows, plus in-game Valve Index controller models when those devices are detected.
