Our take on illumine
The store emphasis on a changing world, creative problem solving, and generated music leaves the non-tutorial structure less prominent. Progress depends on interpreting situations and surroundings rather than following guided instruction.
What is illumine?
Illumine is a non-violent roguelike set in a world that changes in response to the player’s actions.
Instead of a static procedurally generated environment, it presents each situation as a self-contained puzzle with multiple possible approaches, including stealth and manipulation of artificial intelligence. Some inhabitants are hostile, requiring attention to both visual surroundings and sound. Music is generated in real time from nearby AI and gameplay elements, and changes in the soundtrack can signal danger. Progress extends across reincarnations: interactions with others in past lives affect future experiences. The game does not provide traditional tutorials and leaves the player to find a purpose, such as personal development or supporting others.
