Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fast-paced action experience may find the research-and-discovery structure too measured.
- Those looking for a broad range of settings may find the focus on 17th-century European science narrow.
- Players seeking multiplayer play may not find a fit in this single-player-focused description.
Our take on PRINCIPIA: Master of Science
The page emphasizes historical learning and a wide roster of scientists, but the described play centers on choosing research topics, running experiments, and compiling an encyclopedia. Its learning angle is tied to that research loop rather than a separately described teaching format.
What is PRINCIPIA: Master of Science?
Set in 17th-century Europe, this simulation lets players choose from 12 scientists from Isaac Newton’s era and pursue research.
The six topics are astronomy, physics, thermodynamics, biology, optics, and mathematics. Players select one or more topics, carry out experiments, make discoveries, and present findings to the Royal Society of Sciences. Rival scientists can also be belittled. Research contributes to an encyclopedia of inventions and sketches, including the pendulum clock, reflecting telescope, and enlarged views of a cork or flea.
The game follows actual history closely. It began as a game made for a software contest in 2000; the current version has updated systems, graphics, and sound, along with a final theme and order of merit. Its six songs were recorded by a string quartet.
