Saves you a refund- Players looking for a tightly directed campaign may find the current experience centered on open-ended survival and exploration.
- Players who prefer low-pressure sessions may find the mix of survival needs, roaming hordes, and sudden environmental events demanding.
- Players seeking a finished story campaign may find the larger story missions are still planned.
Our take on Plains of Pain
Its broad survival systems trade a directed, finished campaign for player-led exploration and settlement building. The game is in Early Access, and larger story missions are part of the stated future plans, so players seeking a complete narrative arc may find the current structure limited.
What is Plains of Pain?
Plains of Pain is an Early Access survival game set in a procedurally generated post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Survival involves managing thirst, hunger, heat stress, radiation, biohazards, and fatigue while dealing with enemies and changing hazards such as meteor showers. Players can build bases and settlements, craft weapons and equipment, trade with faction-linked traders, and earn reputation through quests, barter, or combat. Reputation can open access to outposts and other faction options. Vehicles provide storage and transport across the desert, while settlement growth requires food and water and can bring production buildings and defenders.
Play is available solo, in co-op, online on official or community servers, or over LAN. World size can be set up to 26x26 km. Larger story-driven missions are described as planned.
