Play it if you…
Good fit- Open-world adventure players who want a journey centered on finding a home for a tribe
- Simulation fans interested in how species respond to player actions
- Action RPG players who want to combine exploration, crafting, trade, and combat
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a tightly directed sequence of missions may find the open-world structure less suited to them.
- Players who prefer a world that remains static between encounters may not enjoy organisms acting independently.
- Players looking for a game focused on human characters may not find that emphasis here.
Our take on Pine
Players who need a clearly directed mission sequence may hit a wall when the game opens into a world of exploration, trade, and species interactions. The other likely sticking point is the ecology system: organisms continue pursuing survival without player involvement, so the world does not wait for a player to initiate every change.
What is Pine?
Pine is an open-world action adventure game set in Albamare, where humans are not at the top of the food chain.
Players take the role of Hue, a young adult searching for a new home for his tribe. The journey spans six biomes and involves exploring, bartering, talking, crafting, and fighting with or against other species. The world’s organisms continue trying to survive without player involvement. Players can befriend a species, fight alongside it, attack it, take its food, or drive it from its habitat. These choices affect how species move across the ecological spectrum.
How Pine plays
- 01Living world
- Species pursue survival in the open world even when Hue is not interacting with them.
- 02Six biomes
- The search for a home for Hue’s tribe takes place across six distinct environments.
- 03Species interactions
- Players can ally with creatures, take their resources, or push them out of their habitats.
