Our take on Phonopolis
Phonopolis replaces the usual realistic dystopian backdrop with a city made from painted paper. Its environmental puzzles also treat loudspeakers, walls, floors, and machinery as parts of the setting to manipulate rather than scenery that merely surrounds the story.
What is Phonopolis?
Phonopolis follows Felix, a dustman who recognizes that the Leader’s commands threaten to strip the city’s citizens of their humanity.
He must stop the Absolute Tone from turning them into mindless servants. Puzzles use the city’s loudspeakers to affect other characters and require manipulation of the cardboard environment. Players can turn walls, rearrange floors, operate machinery, and tear paper curtains. The game presents its dystopian setting as a hand-painted 3D world built from paper, with animation running at 12 frames per second in a style reminiscent of classic stop-motion films. Its visual direction draws on interwar avant-garde movements, while the soundtrack comes from Tomáš Dvořák, also known as Floex.
