Our take on Phantomancer
The store emphasis on more than 150 cards and varied combinations may suggest broad long-term progression, but unlocked cards are the main lasting element. Numerical improvements to cards and stats reset between games, making the run structure more central than permanent character growth.
What is Phantomancer?
Phantomancer is a deck-building roguelike in which Hitoyo, a magician assigned by the Magic Association, fights monsters threatening humanity.
Battles use randomly drawn cards, while a Pouch provides selected cards that can be played at any time. The game includes more than 150 cards, which unlock progressively and remain available between runs, but card and stat upgrades do not carry over numerically. Phantoms attack enemies and defend Hitoyo, with stronger versions created by sacrificing others. Spell cards disappear after use, while Items remain in the Pouch until used. Cards come from battle rewards or shops, and Fruits can strengthen selected cards. Higher difficulty modes allow starting-deck selection and reveal more of Hitoyo and Hinano's story.
How Phantomancer plays
- 01Pouch card access
- Cards stored in the Pouch can be played without depending on the next draw, subject to its capacity limit.
- 02Phantom summoning
- Phantoms attack opponents and shield the protagonist, while advanced versions require other Phantoms as payment.
- 03Persistent card unlocks
- New cards become available as runs progress and remain unlocked in later games without carrying numerical stat improvements forward.
- 04Fruit card upgrades
- Fruits collected during play can be assigned to chosen cards to support different deck plans.
- 05Difficulty story reveals
- Clearing higher difficulty settings exposes additional memories and backstory about Hitoyo and her sister Hinano.
Phantomancer compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also combines roguelike progression with deck construction, but its description centers on positioning, attack tiles, combos, and timing actions against the Shogun. Phantomancer instead uses random card draws, a capacity-limited Pouch, summoned Phantoms, Items, and story progression about two sisters.
