Is OVERWHELM worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Action-platformer fans who want lethal one-hit combat
- Players who enjoy planning boss order around rising enemy difficulty
- Horror-game players who prefer tense exploration with minimal mapping
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking forgiving combat or long uninterrupted runs may find the one-hit death rule and three-death limit restrictive
- Players who prefer stable enemy abilities and predictable progression may dislike power-ups spreading after boss victories
- Players looking for a broad platforming adventure may find the focus on five bosses and repeated runs narrow
Our take on OVERWHELM
Rather than making the player steadily stronger, the game reverses the usual action-platformer progression: every defeated boss increases enemy capabilities. The resulting structure turns victory into a new threat and makes boss order part of run planning.
What is OVERWHELM?
OVERWHELM is an action horror platformer set in oppressive hive caverns.
Exploration uses a sparse map, while enemies may appear unpredictably. Five distinct bosses provide the central progression: defeating each one distributes its abilities among the remaining enemies, increasing the world's difficulty. Combat is fast and lethal, with a single hit causing death. Three deaths end the current run, and boss order can be changed to shape a playthrough. The game uses a restrained soundscape with occasional ominous synth music during boss encounters and other major moments.
How OVERWHELM plays
- 01Escalating Enemy Abilities
- Each defeated boss adds that boss's ability to enemies throughout the world.
- 02Five Bosses
- Boss encounters can be tackled in different sequences to alter a run.
- 03Limited Attempts
- A hit kills the player, and the run ends after three deaths.
- 04Sparse Map
- Cavern exploration is guided by a limited map while threats can emerge unexpectedly.
OVERWHELM compared to similar games
OVERWHELM combines action-horror exploration with lethal platforming and a progression system that transfers defeated bosses' abilities to enemies. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, while OVERWHELM emphasizes five bosses, three-death runs, and enemy escalation instead of a broader definitive-edition metroidvania scope.
