Good fit- Horror-adventure players who want cave exploration with puzzle elements
- Players who enjoy uncovering a story through letters and other written clues
- Players who want to manage BPM, stamina, and flashlight batteries while exploring
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want unrestricted movement may hit a wall when stamina runs out during exploration.
- Players who prefer forgiving survival systems may bounce off the BPM limit, where exceeding 120 causes a heart attack.
- Players seeking broad open-world exploration may find the tunnel-based escape structure too confined.
- Players looking for combat-focused gameplay may not find the exploration and puzzle format suitable.
Our take on Only A Dream
The main bounce point is the heartbeat system: exceeding 120 BPM causes a heart attack, while sprinting, flashlight use, and tunnel exploration add pressure. Players who want unrestricted movement without managing these systems may hit that wall early.
What is Only A Dream?
Only A Dream is a horror-puzzle adventure set in 1990.
John Simmons wakes inside an unfamiliar cave after first waking at about 3AM in his apartment. He explores tunnels, searches for an exit, and reads letters left by his missing father, Frank Simmons. A sensor displays John’s BPM, and exceeding 120 causes a heart attack. Sprinting is limited by stamina, while crouching allows passage through narrow areas and lowers the character’s heartbeat. Flashlight batteries may run out during exploration. Progress is saved when John enters a camp. The story follows the strange tunnels, the letters left by Frank, and the phenomenon surrounding John’s attempt to return to reality on Friday the 13th.
How Only A Dream plays
- 01Heartbeat Monitoring
- A wearable sensor shows BPM, and exceeding 120 causes a heart attack.
- 02Limited Sprinting
- Running consumes stamina that cannot be maintained indefinitely.
- 03Crouching Movement
- Crouching permits passage through tight areas and lowers the character’s heartbeat.
- 04Letter-Based Story
- Messages from Frank Simmons provide narrative clues during the tunnel exploration.
- 05Camp Checkpoints
- Progress is saved whenever the character enters a camp.
