Is Oakenfold worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who enjoy turn-based tactical puzzles with reversible decisions
- Roguelike fans who want procedurally varied missions, upgrades, and items
- Players who like experimenting with enemy interactions and ability combinations
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking persistent progression may hit a wall with permadeath, which ends a run after a fatal outcome.
- Those who prefer immediate action may bounce off the encounter structure of pre-indicated attacks and limited actions.
- Players looking for large-scale military command may find the focus on individual tactical puzzles too narrow.
Our take on Oakenfold
Players who rely on planning one complete solution before acting may bounce at the encounter stage, where the game expects experimentation with limited actions and repeated TimeScrubber reversals. Those seeking permanent run progress may hit the permadeath system instead.
What is Oakenfold?
Oakenfold is a turn-based roguelike strategy game set on a failing Earth.
Each encounter shows incoming enemy attacks and limits the available actions, creating tactical puzzles around positioning, manipulation, and protection of fuel-packed cargo. Enemies can be shoved, drowned, crushed, or made to attack one another. The TimeScrubber provides unlimited undo and redo, allowing different plans to be tested during an encounter. Runs use procedurally generated paths, missions, upgrades, and items, while permadeath gives decisions lasting consequences. Players can combine upgrades into different ability builds, choose among Asha’s starting mindsets, compete on highscores, and take part in a shared weekly challenge. The game also includes 36 Steam achievements.
