Our take on Montero

Rather than centering progression on a growing character, the game keeps the hunter’s skills fixed during each mission and puts advancement in player knowledge, equipment choices, and experience across randomly generated investigations.

What is Montero?

Play as a dwarf monster hunter defending settlers in a procedurally created village.

Each quest usually lasts from half an hour to one and a half hours. The character begins with trained tracking, crafting, fighting, and hunting abilities rather than improving skills during the session. Progress depends on selecting equipment and learning from the world across missions. Investigate the unknown enemy by gathering physical clues, questioning villagers, and examining corpses.

Gather local resources, craft equipment, construct barricades, and place traps before the final confrontation. Settlers can suffer wounds, poisoning, illness, and other conditions, and losing every settler fails the mission. Wild animals, robbers, poisonous fungi, insects, hunger, cold, bleeding, injuries, and stress add further hazards. Successful missions add gear for later attempts.

How Montero plays

01Evidence-based investigation
Identify the location’s final enemy by collecting clues, interviewing residents, and inspecting bodies.
02Prepared combat
Use found materials to make equipment, build defenses, and arrange traps before the boss encounter.
03Persistent gear collection
Completed missions add equipment that remains available for subsequent missions.
04Settler survival
The mission fails if no villagers remain, while injuries, illness, poisoning, and other conditions require attention.

Montero compared to similar games

Montero combines fantasy investigation, village protection, resource preparation, and randomly generated missions, while Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on exploring a strange city and an unconventional story. Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating crime and escaping a prison, whereas Montero asks players to identify a monster threat and keep settlers alive. Ghost of a Tale emphasizes exploration, stealth, disguises, and conversations in an animal-populated medieval world rather than Montero’s evidence gathering, defenses, and survival conditions.
