Our take on Marrow
The focus on dark exploration makes visibility a constraint: Medallions are needed to illuminate the way, so searching the mountain can depend on finding them. The limited supply of usable blades and relics also narrows combat options.
What is Marrow?
Marrow is a 2D cosmic-horror action-adventure set inside a mountain, with a rotted town, crypt, Manor, and buried spaces beneath them.
Play combines platforming, navigation, puzzles, and combat. Players can avoid or confront dozens of enemy types using a small number of usable blades and relics. Exploration can increase Grit and Clarity, reveal skills such as Pyro-burst and Grit Regain, and uncover Medallions that illuminate the way. The Luminous Orb can defend against attacks, solve riddles, and support movement between Orbital Anchors.
Fissures lead to the Echo Realm, where the world appears from a different perspective and new dangers await. Regular enemies stay defeated until a Save Point is activated, while bosses do not return this way. Completing the game unlocks Echo Mode and Survival Mode, which can be combined.
How Marrow plays
- 01Handcrafted Areas
- The underground setting uses individually made locations rather than randomly generated or procedural spaces.
- 02Distinct Enemies
- Ghosts, shades, and other monsters have different traits and weaknesses, and numerous bosses include optional encounters.
- 03Exploration Upgrades
- Searching the setting can increase Grit and Clarity and reveal skills such as Pyro-burst and Grit Regain.
- 04Echo Realm
- Fissures provide access to another view of the world, with additional dangers at the edge of normal perception.
- 05Persistent Enemy Defeats
- Regular enemies stay beaten until a Save Point is activated, which brings them back; bosses are excluded.
- 06Post-Game Modes
- Finishing the game unlocks Echo Mode and Survival Mode, and both can be used at once.
- 07Survival Lives
- After the final life, the game resets and saves, while dolls hidden where friends were found serve as extra lives.
