Our take on Islands & Trains
The relaxed, no-rules framing presents the game as a freeform creative activity, but that also means there is no mission structure or stated endpoint. Players seeking directed progression may find the emphasis on scenery and track placement narrower than the broad island setting suggests.
What is Islands & Trains?
Islands & Trains is an open-ended sandbox for building miniature railway dioramas on islands.
Create a train route across mountains and lakes, then watch the scene come to life as the train travels. Place animals and alter the surrounding countryside to shape the setting. The game has no goals, missions, timers, or penalties for mistakes, so play focuses on arranging tracks and scenery without a required outcome. Routes can pass through environments such as seaside villages and winter forests. Each island becomes a small scene to compose, with the railway, landscape, and placed animals forming the main activity.
How Islands & Trains plays
- 01Island scenery editing
- Animals can be placed while the surrounding countryside is changed to shape each diorama.
- 02Railway route building
- Tracks can cross lakes and wind around mountains as the train travels through the scene.
- 03Unstructured sandbox play
- No goals, missions, timers, or mistakes impose a required direction on the building process.
