SimulationIs Gridworld worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Simulation fans who want to observe evolution without directing individual creatures
- Players interested in artificial life, neural networks, and natural selection
- Sandbox users who want to alter environmental conditions and watch populations react
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking direct control over individual characters rather than an automatically running ecosystem
- Players who want a fixed campaign or carefully scripted sequence instead of changing populations and unique simulations
- Players looking for a conventional action, puzzle, or story-driven game
Our take on Gridworld
The emphasis on dramatic evolutionary outcomes may suggest a hands-on strategy game, but the main activity is observing an automated simulation. Editing tools and interventions add control, while much of the experience remains focused on waiting and watching populations develop.
What is Gridworld?
Gridworld simulates a 2D, grid-based ecosystem populated by virtual creatures with bodies and neural-network brains encoded in DNA.
Creatures sense their surroundings, move, eat, avoid danger, reproduce, and attack. The simulation begins with food and randomly generated creatures; successful genetic combinations can spread through reproduction while mutations may improve, harm, or leave survival unchanged. Premade scenarios start evolution with simple creatures, while world-editing tools and adjustable environmental settings allow changes to the simulation. Populations may develop food-finding, predator-avoidance, ambush, clustering, speciation, parasite, and virus behaviors. The simulation runs automatically, allowing observation over hours or days, with the option to intervene and introduce new challenges.
How Gridworld plays
- 01Neural-network creatures
- Each creature has sensory inputs, behavioral outputs, and a brain encoded in its DNA.
- 02Evolutionary simulation
- Reproduction passes on mutations that can spread or disappear through survival and selection.
- 03Premade scenarios
- Several scenarios provide starting creatures so evolutionary activity begins without waiting for a successful random combination.
- 04World editing tools
- Environmental conditions and simulation settings can be changed, including during an active simulation.
- 05Emergent populations
- Simulations can produce population booms, predator-prey splits, distinct species, parasites, viruses, and temporary multicellular groups.
