Our take on Grey Hack
Rather than presenting hacking as a sequence of scripted missions, the game treats computer networks as an open sandbox. Players can alter commands, create exploits, publish web pages, form guilds, and leave changes in a world that continues running after they exit.
What is Grey Hack?
Grey Hack places players in a shared online world filled with procedurally created computers.
Starting tools include a file browser, command terminal, and text editor; further utilities become available as skills develop. Each network differs in layout, scale, and defenses, with a dynamic exploit system creating distinct targets. Players can investigate administrator weaknesses, establish backdoors, try exploits, and conceal their activity. UNIX-based commands drive the terminal, while the built-in scripting language supports altering commands and developing new exploits. The sandbox offers paid assignments, reputation building, web publishing, guild formation, player-versus-player attacks, and concealed missions. Online changes remain after players disconnect, whereas solo worlds pause when the game closes.
How Grey Hack plays
- 01Persistent Online World
- Changes made to computers remain visible to other players after the original player disconnects.
- 02Custom Exploit Scripting
- The in-game scripting language allows existing terminal commands to be modified and new exploits to be created.
- 03Variable Network Challenges
- Networks differ in configuration, size, and security, with an exploit system that creates different challenges.
- 04Single-Player Mode
- A local world is available, and its progress resumes when the player returns.
- 05Community Translations
- Players can create and access language packs through Steam Workshop.
