Our take on Icaria
Automation becomes increasingly necessary as production grows, trading direct manual control for planning through scripts and logistics. The programming focus may be less suitable for players who want to manage a colony without building automated production systems.
What is Icaria?
Icaria is a single-player colony-building game focused on programmable robots and factories.
Players collect resources, craft items, reshape voxel terrain, and create logistics networks while expanding across a procedurally generated alien planet. Each game generates different resources, biomes, and exploration challenges. The initial visible area is limited, with further territory revealed through a radio network. Automation becomes increasingly necessary as the colony expands and production recipes grow more complex. The game includes visual scripting, shareable scripts, mutable terrain, fog of war, power mechanics, trucks for long-distance transport, and farming systems involving trees that grow, die, and can be cultivated. Robot teams can gather materials, alter the landscape, and scale factory operations.
How Icaria plays
- 01Programmable automation
- Visual scripts can control robot work and factory production as the colony expands.
- 02Procedural planets
- Each game presents a different combination of resources, biomes, and areas to explore.
- 03Mutable voxel terrain
- The planetary landscape can be altered during colony development.
- 04Shareable scripts
- Automation scripts created in the game can be shared.
- 05Colony logistics
- Radio networks, power systems, crafting, and trucks support expansion and resource movement.
Icaria compared to similar games
Icaria combines robot and factory automation with colony expansion, terrain alteration, exploration, and resource collection on procedurally generated planets. SpaceChem centers on taking a reactor-engineering role and constructing factories that convert raw materials into chemical products for frontier colonies.
