Our take on Ghost in the Machine
Rather than expanding the action genre with weapons, abilities, or elaborate controls, it reduces movement to walking and jumping. Its challenge comes from factory hazards, precise timing, hidden collectibles, and restricted visibility, replacing combat progression with positional problem-solving.
What is Ghost in the Machine?
Escape a damaged factory after a major explosion while avoiding machines that can crush or mechanically separate the character.
This action platformer uses left, right, and jump controls, with a single-button setup for keyboard and USB game pads. Levels combine puzzles, traps, and timing-based hazards, and can be tackled in a semi-linear order. Each stage contains a hidden collectible that reveals part of the character’s story and opens secret content. The game uses four shades at a time, a circular edge mask that limits visibility, and music and sound effects made with a Nintendo Famicom and Game Boy. A built-in editor lets players make levels to share with friends.
How Ghost in the Machine plays
- 01Semi-linear levels
- Stages can be approached in an order that avoids being blocked by one unsolved level.
- 02Hidden story items
- One secret collectible per level reveals information about the character’s situation and opens additional secrets.
- 03Built-in level editor
- Custom stages can be created and shared with friends.
- 04Restricted visual field
- A circular mask around the screen edge limits visibility inside the factory.
- 05Four-shade graphics
- Visuals use no more than four shades at once, drawing from Game Boy and MSX-era presentation.
Ghost in the Machine compared to similar games
SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER combines running, shooting, dodging, and killing, while Ghost in the Machine centers on jumping, traps, puzzles, and factory navigation. Sundered®: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, whereas Ghost in the Machine uses semi-linear stages, a one-button control scheme, and hidden level collectibles. Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, exploration, and a meditative ascent rather than platforming through hazardous machinery.
