Is GearBlocks worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Mechanically minded builders who want to assemble vehicles and machines
- Sandbox players who prefer open-ended construction over a fixed campaign
- Modders interested in creating scenarios, tools, or mini-games with Lua
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a structured story or progression path may hit a wall when the game opens into freeform construction.
- Builders who do not want to learn part connections and mechanical behaviours may stall while creating functioning machines.
- Players looking for a combat-focused vehicle game may find the emphasis on construction and physical testing too broad.
Our take on GearBlocks
The bounce point arrives at the construction system: players must decide how parts connect and how behaviours interact before a machine performs as intended. The open-ended format can also leave players without a clear next objective once the tutorial and challenge scenarios are complete.
What is GearBlocks?
GearBlocks is an open-ended sandbox for constructing mechanical creations from more than 200 parts.
Builders can assemble or repair machines across the map, resize components, change materials, apply paint, and connect their behaviours. Parts include motors, gears, pulleys, joints, springs, and actuators. Vehicles such as cars, trucks, cranes, and tanks can be driven and physically tested, while creations can be damaged in challenge scenarios. An in-game tutorial and example builds introduce construction methods. Players can also make rag-doll characters, create custom tools and scenarios with Lua scripting, and exchange creations through the community workshop.
How GearBlocks plays
- 01Mechanical construction
- More than 200 components include motors, gears, pulleys, joints, springs, and actuators.
- 02Physical machine testing
- Built vehicles and mechanisms can be driven, pushed, crashed, and damaged during testing.
- 03Build customisation
- Parts can be resized, given different materials, painted, and connected through linked behaviours.
- 04Lua modding
- Lua scripting supports custom tools, scenarios, challenges, and mini-games.
- 05Community workshop
- Players can share creations and try builds made by other community members.
GearBlocks compared to similar games
SpaceChem centres on designing chemical-processing factories to solve structured production puzzles, while GearBlocks focuses on assembling and physically testing vehicles, machines, and mechanisms. Fun with Ragdolls: The Game also offers sandbox construction and rag-doll interaction, but GearBlocks adds mechanical components, drive systems, Lua-based customisation, and workshop sharing.
