Is Gates of Troy worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want both empire management and battlefield command
- Ancient-history enthusiasts interested in Greek campaigns and named heroes
- Players seeking TCP/IP multiplayer in a historical strategy game
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a focused, small-scale strategy game may hit a wall when managing empires, cities, diplomacy, espionage, and armies together.
- Players wanting only tactical battles may bounce off the campaign layer and its nation-level management.
- Players looking for a modern setting will not find one here, since the campaigns center on ancient Greece and Troy.
Our take on Gates of Troy
The bounce point arrives when battlefield command gives way to empire management. Players who want only unit clashes may lose interest when city building, diplomacy, espionage, and national strategy become part of the same campaign.
What is Gates of Troy?
Gates of Troy combines strategic campaigns with 3D tactical battles in an ancient Greek setting.
Players control empires, develop cities and structures, and use diplomacy, espionage, and military force to shape Greece’s history. The game includes six campaigns, including a recreation of Thermopylae at a one-to-one scale. Nineteen heroes, including Leonidas, Odysseus, Paris, Hector, and Achilles, can influence troop morale and fight on the battlefield. Three tutorial scenarios introduce the game. TCP/IP support allows multiplayer games, while an electronic book and print-ready manual provide additional documentation. Earlier Spartan scenarios and campaigns are also supported by the Gates of Troy engine.
