Our take on FreeHolder
FreeHolder departs from a standard RPG journey by making farm labor, food, weather, and Roman demands central pressures. It also uses roguelike repetition and procedural conditions in place of one fixed progression through the story.
What is FreeHolder?
FreeHolder combines farming, survival, role-playing, strategy, and roguelike elements in a story about three escaped slaves during the Roman Republic.
After finding a recently raided farm, the group agrees to run it while facing a census taker's wheat quota and bribe. Farming, hunting, crafting, and cooking support life on the frontier, where starvation and frostbite are dangers. Players can resist Roman control through stealth, subterfuge, brute force, or alliances with northern tribes. Another path involves purchasing freedom and entering Roman high society. Character development includes seven classes and more than thirty skills, with further classes and skills planned. More than a dozen procedurally generated factors change each game, while multiple upgrade paths and special actions shape character development.
How FreeHolder plays
- 01Farm Operations

- 03Character Development

- 04Procedural Conditions

- 05Freedom Paths
