Our take on Flashback
The release keeps the original game at its core, so its modern additions focus on presentation, rewinding, and tutorials rather than adding a larger set of gameplay systems.
What is Flashback?
Flashback follows Conrad B.
Hart, a young scientist who wakes on Saturn’s colonised moon, Titan, after fleeing a spaceship without his memory. Enemies and kidnappers pursue him as he faces dangers, seeks a way back to Earth, and investigates an extraterrestrial plot threatening the planet. This edition includes the original 1993 game and a Modern mode. Modern mode adds post-processing visual filters, remastered sound and music, a rewind function that varies with difficulty, and tutorials. The game uses hand-drawn backgrounds and motion-captured animation within a science-fiction storyline.
How Flashback plays
- 01Modern Mode
- Adds visual filters, revised audio, difficulty-dependent rewinding, and tutorials to the original game.
- 02Science-Fiction Story
- The narrative follows Conrad’s efforts to survive on Titan, reach Earth, and investigate a threat to the planet.
- 03Hand-Drawn Backgrounds
- The game presents environments with backgrounds created by hand.
- 04Motion-Captured Animation
- Character animation was created using motion-capture technology.
Flashback compared to similar games
Flashback combines action-adventure gameplay with a science-fiction storyline, while Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, route choice, and a meditative journey. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is a chaotic metroidvania with roguelite elements and previous updates, giving it a different gameplay structure from Flashback.
