Our take on Exit Limbo: Opening
Rather than confining beat ’em up combat to straightforward stages, the game pairs layered melee encounters with nonlinear exploration and routes opened by acquired moves. Its infected hometown setting and use of severed limbs as weapons also depart from a cleaner arcade presentation.
What is Exit Limbo: Opening?
Exit Limbo: Opening is the first chapter of a side-scrolling beat ’em up.
After surviving a train crash, Mr Rhino wakes in an infected, dystopian version of his hometown. Combat includes combos, special moves, throws and counters, as well as encounters that respond to the situation. Enemies can be torn apart, and their limbs can be used as weapons. The world has a nonlinear level structure, with secrets and passageways accessible using acquired moves.
Exploration also includes parkour movement, bizarre characters and gangs that control different areas. The game features hand-drawn 2D characters, light-sensitive maps and a retro synthwave soundtrack composed by the Exit Limbo band. It reworks the classic side-scrolling beat ’em up with adventure elements and a nonlinear world.
