Our take on Effigy : The Descent
The single-lantern design keeps the survival mechanic focused, but it also limits the available ways to respond to threats. With two statue types and six required artefacts, progression centers on managing light and movement rather than building a varied inventory or combat loadout.
What is Effigy : The Descent?
Effigy: The Descent is a first-person survival-horror game about a lost explorer entering a cursed cave.
The goal is to find six artefacts and assemble them at the exit to escape. Statues pursue the explorer when they are not being watched, while light-sensitive variants can be halted by the lantern. The lantern is the only tool available, so its use must be managed while progressing through the cave. Two statue types increase the pressure as exploration continues. The environment contains traces of a forgotten civilization whose people are tied to the cave. The game was created by 10 students over a four-month project alongside their regular courses.
How Effigy : The Descent plays
- 01Lantern-Based Defense
- The lantern can stop the light-sensitive statue variant and is the explorer's sole tool.
- 02Six Artefact Objective
- Escape requires collecting six artefacts and putting them together at the cave's exit.
- 03Two Statue Types
- The cave contains ordinary statues and a light-reactive variant that pursue the explorer.
- 04Progressive Pressure
- The cave's difficulty increases with progress toward the artefact objective.
