Our take on Divekick
The two-button premise makes the game sound like a minimal experiment, but the package also includes more than 14 original characters, character-specific techniques, story content, local versus play, and ranked online competition. The central limitation is deliberate: each round ends after one hit.
What is Divekick?
Divekick is a fighting game controlled with two buttons and no directional pad.
Dive sends a character straight upward, while Kick launches a downward attack; pressing Kick while grounded makes the character jump away. The first hit takes the round, and the first player to win five rounds takes the game. The roster includes more than 14 original characters, each with distinct fighting styles and special techniques, plus Fencer from Nidhogg and Johnny Gat from Saints Row. Each character has a story with an introduction, ending, and rival battles. Modes include single-player, two-player local versus, ranked online multiplayer, and non-ranked online multiplayer. The game also includes character and overall ranking boards, button reconfiguration, and Steamworks integration.
How Divekick plays
- 01Two-button combat
- Dive rises vertically, while Kick launches a downward strike or moves the character away when used from the ground.
- 02One-hit rounds
- A single successful hit decides each round, with victory going to the first player who wins five rounds.
- 03Character roster
- The game includes more than 14 original fighters with individual styles and special techniques, alongside Fencer and Johnny Gat.
- 04Character story modes
- Every character has an introduction, ending, and rival battles.
- 05Online multiplayer
- Ranked and non-ranked matches use GGPO, with separate boards for individual characters and overall results.
- 06Local versus play
- Two players can compete locally, with button settings that can be changed between matches.
