Our take on Desolation Tycoon
Its defining structure is a persistent world that develops across successive merchant lifetimes, with each character leaving consequences for those who follow.
What is Desolation Tycoon?
Play as a merchant traveling through a demon-haunted post-apocalypse, trading goods and defending cargo from giant insects, bandits, calamities, and other dangers.
Each character has a randomly generated history and traits, improves skills through use, and eventually retires or dies. Supply and demand networks are randomized between playthroughs, while repeated trading with the same cities reduces profitability. Actions affect relationships with city notables and contribute to the rebuilding of civilization. Progress carries across characters, with accumulated accomplishments unlocking new cities, crew units, and challenges. There is no fixed storyline or real-time pressure: time advances through chosen actions, and encounters focus on decisions and trade-offs.
How Desolation Tycoon plays
- 01Persistent World
- Actions taken by one character can affect the setting experienced by later characters.
- 02Character Lifetimes
- Each randomly generated character eventually leaves the game through retirement or death.
- 03Dynamic Trading
- Repeatedly trading with the same cities makes those routes less profitable.
- 04Skill Development
- Character skills improve through use during play.
- 05Decision Encounters
- Encounters are resolved through choices rather than real-time challenges or minigames.
