Our take on Desktop Fishes
The idle overlay format trades active gameplay for a background experience. Fish continue developing while other activities take attention, but the design centers on observation, collection, decoration, and gradual upgrades rather than constant interaction.
What is Desktop Fishes?
Desktop Fishes places a pixel-art aquarium over the desktop or behind windows as a living wallpaper.
Fish begin as eggs, hatch, and mature into adults while players breed them to produce inherited traits and rare mutations across more than 10,000 possible genetic combinations. Accessories such as hats and glasses customize individual fish. Seaweed grows in the aquarium and can be cut back, while fish eat some of the excess plants. An octopus market sells food, toys, and accessories. A skill tree provides upgrades that alter fish behavior and expand the aquarium. The game is built for idle play, allowing the aquarium to continue while other work or games are in use.
