Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a conventional victory condition may find the goal of losing less a bleak substitute for winning.
- Those wanting direct, hands-on battlefield combat may find the bunker-based command structure distant from the action.
- Players looking for a single-player-focused experience may find the emphasis on multiplayer less suited to their preferences.
Our take on DEFCON
Rather than framing strategy around a decisive victory, DEFCON makes loss the central measure: players manage nuclear exchanges while tracking the casualties they cause. Its alliance-making and betrayals bring social brinkmanship into the conflict.
What is DEFCON?
DEFCON is a strategy game about global thermonuclear war, inspired by the film Wargames.
Players operate from an underground bunker, positioning submarines, missile silos, and air defenses while trying to damage enemy populations and protect their own. Attacks expose vulnerabilities to retaliation, so decisions balance aggression against self-preservation. In multiplayer, players can form and break alliances as they navigate brinkmanship and the risk of total nuclear war. A minimalist military-style interface and a tense soundscape frame the action, while real-time death tolls show the human cost as cities are destroyed. The aim is not a clean victory, but to lose less than the opposing side.
How DEFCON plays
- 01Nuclear force deployment
- Submarines, missile silos, and air defenses can be positioned for strategic exchanges.
- 02Shifting multiplayer alliances
- Players can cooperate and betray one another while weighing aggression against the threat of retaliation.
- 03Live death tolls
- A running count records the human cost as cities are destroyed.
