Is Deep Despair worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Survival sandbox players who want to gather, craft, build, and farm in an open-ended order
- Explorers who want to descend through caves, river caves, and lava caves for resources
- Players who enjoy managing hunger, food preparation, shelter, and crop conditions
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who do not want recurring survival upkeep may hit a wall when hunger requires regular eating and low satiety slows the character.
- Players seeking a forgiving night cycle may struggle when night becomes dangerous for a poorly developed character and shelter must be built in time.
- Players looking for a tightly guided sequence may find the freedom to plan activities in any order too open-ended.
Our take on Deep Despair
The clearest sticking point is survival upkeep: hunger continues to demand food, and at complete hunger the character loses health until death. Farming also requires attention to moisture, since soil dries over time and crops grow only in wet soil.
What is Deep Despair?
Deep Despair is a retro-styled survival sandbox focused on exploration, resource gathering, crafting, digging, construction, farming, and hunger management.
Its world has four levels: the upper world, caves, caves with rivers, and caves with lava. Each level leads downward, where deeper areas contain more valuable resources and dungeons may include abandoned mines. Day and night change dynamically, making nighttime a serious test for a poorly developed character. Survival requires food, weapons, shelter, and a bonfire for cooking. Wheat and potatoes can be grown in loosened soil, but crops need moisture and the soil dries over time. The game includes more than 100 units of content and large worlds to explore.
How Deep Despair plays
- 01Four world levels
- Deeper areas contain more valuable resources, and dungeons can include abandoned mines.
- 02Hunger and health
- Low satiety slows the character, while complete hunger drains health until death; health recovers above 80% satiety.
- 03Crop cultivation
- Wheat and potatoes grow in loosened, moist soil, which may need periodic watering.
- 04Fire cooking
- A bonfire cooks meat and potatoes, needs sticks to keep burning, and goes out over time.
Deep Despair compared to similar games
Mr. Prepper centers on building an underground shelter while dealing with the threat of nuclear war and an authoritarian government. Deep Despair instead centers on freely exploring its world, gathering resources, crafting, farming, and descending through four levels. Force of Nature also combines sandbox exploration with gathering and mining, while its description emphasizes more than 10 zones with distinct flora and fauna.
