RPGIs Dead Hand worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Tactical roguelike players who want turn-based action-point combat rather than real-time battles
- Players who enjoy adapting weapons and equipment by scavenging parts rather than gaining XP or levels
- Tactical combat fans who want destructible terrain to affect cover and movement
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want progress to carry over between runs will hit the no-metaprogression system.
- Players who prefer forgiving retries may hit a wall when a platform's destruction ends the run permanently.
- Players looking for a real-time strategy game may find the turn-based action-point combat does not match their preferred pace.
Our take on Dead Hand
The clearest bounce point is the end of a run: permadeath removes the platform, and there is no metaprogression to preserve upgrades. Players who expect repeated attempts to build persistent strength will instead need to rely on learned tactics.
What is Dead Hand?
Control an autonomous weapons platform on a multi-level trek through underground caverns filled with hostile robotic vehicles.
Combat uses turn-based action points, freeform movement, and simulated projectile trajectories with collision detection. The cave environment is destructible: dig cover or use explosives to break through enemy defenses. Scavenge parts from defeated enemies and use them to change the platform’s weapons and equipment; progression comes from its components rather than experience points or character levels. Procedural generation changes the caves between runs. Permadeath means a run ends with the platform’s destruction, and there is no metaprogression: improvement comes from learning the game rather than carrying upgrades between attempts.
How Dead Hand plays
- 01Destructible Caverns
- Dig protective positions or blast through cover as part of combat.
- 02Parts-Based Upgrades
- Scavenge components from defeated enemies to modify the weapons platform.
- 03Simulated Ballistics
- Projectile paths and collision detection determine shots instead of abstract hit chances.
- 04Procedural Runs
- Cave layouts are generated for each run.
- 05Permadeath Runs
- A destroyed platform ends its run, with no persistent progression between attempts.
