Our take on Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder
The short-run structure keeps each city focused, but it gives up the sustained planning space of a long-form citybuilder. Procedural maps and changing guild pairs favor repeated experimentation over developing one metropolis across an extended campaign.
What is Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder?
Combolands combines citybuilding with roguelike and deckbuilder mechanics.
Each run begins on a procedurally generated island, where buildings are placed to grow a hamlet into a city and create linked effects. Players select two of seven guilds per run, with each guild offering distinct buildings, playstyles, strengths, and drawbacks. The game includes more than 120 buildings, over 100 passive heirlooms, building upgrades, map-altering potions, and 13 or more councillors with individual abilities and progression. Runs are structured as short sessions of about 30 minutes. New guilds can be unlocked during play, while 10 increasingly difficult ranks provide a progression path. Strategic choices center on combining guilds, buildings, upgrades, and other effects.
