Our take on Chroma Lab
Rather than using the level-and-objective structure common in many games, Chroma Lab centers on an open-ended physics sandbox. Its play comes from changing particle behavior and experimenting with tools, with no campaign structure described.
What is Chroma Lab?
Chroma Lab is a VR particle physics sandbox where colorful particles move and interact like a fluid.
Tools let players pick up, strike, pull, explode, shoot, and paint particles, while force spheres can move them between locations. Particle behavior can be changed through adjustable physics settings, optional gravity and lava-lamp modes, and controls for freezing the simulation or slowing time. Visual options include different particle shaders and color palettes. Scenes and settings can be saved and loaded, with presets available. Particles can react to music from an external player. Players can adjust the simulation scale and boundaries, and choose automatic or manual particle counts. The sandbox also supports MixCast and the Oculus SDK for Rift and Touch users.
How Chroma Lab plays
- 01Particle interaction tools
- Tools can move, strike, pull, burst, launch, or color the particles.
- 02Scene saving
- Saved scenes retain particle arrangements and settings, and presets are included.
- 03Simulation controls
- Optional gravity and lava-lamp modes are available, and time can be paused or slowed.
- 04Music response
- Particles can respond to music played through an external player.
- 05Adjustable scale
- Scale and boundary settings accommodate seated play through room-scale use.
