Our take on Check and Slash
Players who expect chess to pause between moves may hit a wall as soon as combat begins: movement and attacks happen in real time. Those who prefer a fixed route may also find the randomly generated maze difficult to plan around.
What is Check and Slash?
Check and Slash combines real-time combat with movement based on chess pieces.
Players move through a procedurally generated maze of rooms, attack enemies, dodge their strikes, and rescue black pieces to gain upgrades. Defeating enemies increases attack strength, while randomly presented options shape the character’s build. The maze contains 43 rooms to unlock, with different enemy combinations, and six bosses. New skills and upgrades become available as the game progresses. The game is not turn-based: chess rules are paired with action mechanics. It also includes Steam achievements and a leaderboard for speedruns, with support for both controllers and keyboards.
