- Philip K. Dick fans interested in identity, simulacra, and unstable realities
- Adventure players who prefer atmospheric investigation over combat-focused gameplay
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking combat, survival systems, or extensive character progression may hit a wall because the core activity is investigation.
- Players who need a straightforward narrative may struggle when memories, hallucinations, and alternate realities begin to overlap.
- Players looking for an open-ended simulation may find the experience too focused on a predefined psychological mystery.
Our take on Californium
Players may bounce off when the investigation stops offering a stable version of events. The overlapping memories, hallucinations, and alternate realities make uncertainty part of progression, so anyone needing clear chronology or direct explanations may hit that wall quickly.
What is Californium?
Californium is a first-person adventure set in Berkeley in 1967.
It follows Elvin Green, a science fiction writer facing depression, insomnia, career struggles, and memories that no longer fit together. Players explore shifting environments, solve riddles, investigate glitches, and search for clues about identity and reality. Drug use, cheap alcohol, hallucinations, and alternate realities shape the experience as familiar people and places become unstable. The game presents its story through psychedelic visuals, a soundtrack by Xavier Thiry, and the character Theta, performed by Paul Bandey. Its premise draws on the science fiction themes associated with Philip K. Dick.
