Play it if you…
Good fit- Action-roguelite players who want permadeath and changing routes
- Fantasy combat fans who enjoy combining spells, skills, items, and terrain effects
- Players who want a campaign structure with varied locations and a separate survival mode
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a persistent character may bounce off the permadeath system, which ends a run after defeat.
- Players who prefer slow, purely linear combat may hit a wall with the fast-paced, tactical action and changing routes.
- Players seeking a fixed set of abilities may find the randomized items and build combinations too variable.
Our take on Break the Empire
The bounce point is the permadeath loop: a defeat ends the current campaign run. Players who prefer persistent progress may also hit resistance when combining character abilities, shared skills, randomized item qualities, and terrain effects becomes central to each attempt.
What is Break the Empire?
Break the Empire is a fast-paced, tactical action-roguelite about fighting through the Empire to reach the capital and defeat the emperor.
Each playthrough forms a mini-campaign from a village to the emperor’s castle, passing through locations such as magical glades, towns, fortresses, and dwarven mines. Eight characters each have six spells and six passive skills, while 12 base skills are available to everyone. Terrain affects combat: fire spreads across grass, water can freeze, and pits can be fallen into. Randomized item qualities, varied enemies, 11 bosses, permadeath, 70 achievements, and a Last Stand survival mode shape the replay structure.
