Our take on Ben and Ed
The limb-loss mechanic gives the platforming a distinctive physical puzzle element, but it also makes the experience depend on repeated hazard navigation rather than broader exploration or varied progression systems.
What is Ben and Ed?
Ben and Ed is a 3D platformer set inside a dystopian game show.
Players control Ed, a zombie forced to face Hans Showmaster’s obstacle courses in an attempt to rescue his friend Ben. Ed can lose limbs and throw his head to reach hidden places before recovering his body. Movement includes jumping, crawling, creeping, dodging, and navigating hazards. The game includes 23 obstacle courses containing blades, hammers, lasers, acid, dog food, and chickens. Players also face monstrous machines and can unlock additional challenges. The structure centers on reaching each course’s goal regardless of Ed’s physical condition.
How Ben and Ed plays
- 01Detachable Zombie Parts
- Ed can continue through hazards after losing limbs and can throw his head to access concealed areas.
- 02Obstacle Course Hazards
- The 23 courses use traps including blades, hammers, lasers, acid, dog food, and chickens.
- 03Unlockable Challenges
- Additional challenges become available beyond the main obstacle courses.
- 04Monstrous Machines
- Some sections require Ed to overcome large mechanical enemies or hazards.
Ben and Ed compared to similar games
Ben and Ed focuses on 3D obstacle-course platforming with detachable limbs and 23 hazard-filled courses. SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER is a runner with shooting elements, while Jusant centers on climbing, stamina management, exploration, and uncovering a past civilization. The alternatives therefore use running-and-shooting or climbing-and-exploration workflows rather than Ben and Ed’s zombie traversal challenges.
