Our take on Below the Stone
The expedition system makes every loadout decision consequential: carrying stronger equipment increases capability but also increases what can be lost. That trade-off limits carefree experimentation, especially when deeper caves offer greater rewards alongside higher risks.
What is Below the Stone?
Below the Stone follows dwarves through procedurally created underground regions in an extraction roguelike.
Every expedition can present different terrain, monsters, materials, and several dungeons within a layer. Gear changes a dwarf’s attributes and abilities, while the Dwarven Kingdom serves as a base for making equipment, preparing journeys, storing supplies, and meeting potential companions. Resources left at home remain secure, but anything taken underground is forfeited when the dwarf dies. Lower areas introduce stronger threats alongside more valuable finds. The game also offers bespoke cave assignments and more than an hour of music. The vendor’s stated plans include over 25 biomes and a roster of at least 10–12 significant characters.
How Below the Stone plays
- 01Generated Cave Runs
- Cave complexes change between descents, with different layouts, creatures, plants, and resources.
- 02Risk-Based Inventory
- Loot stored in the Dwarven Kingdom remains safe, while equipment and items carried underground are lost on death.
- 03Equipment Loadouts
- Weapons, armor, and tools alter a dwarf’s statistics and abilities during expeditions.
- 04Dwarven Kingdom
- The home area supports crafting, preparation, resource storage, and the arrival of rescued companions.
- 05Rescueable Companions
- Underground characters can be rescued and brought home, where they provide modifiers and affect play styles.
- 06Layered Dungeons
- Each underground layer contains multiple dungeons, with more dangerous environments and greater rewards farther down.
