Our take on BELOW
Rather than presenting a fixed adventure path, BELOW makes procedural underground exploration the central structure. It removes navigational guidance and places progress around choosing routes, surviving hazards, and finding secrets in an environment that changes from one journey to the next.
What is BELOW?
BELOW is a solitary action-adventure RPG set beneath a forbidden island.
Players choose routes through procedurally generated underground labyrinths populated by wildlife, monsters, traps, and hazardous environments. Survival involves scavenging materials, gathering ingredients, and crafting remedies or tools. The world contains secret areas, concealed passages, and mysteries to uncover, while a shadowy presence pursues the player. Death can follow a wrong step, and the game provides no hints for navigation or discovery. Exploration, survival, and uncovering the depths form the central structure.
How BELOW plays
- 01Procedural Labyrinths
- Underground routes are generated through a hazardous subterranean world.
- 02Survival Crafting
- Collected materials and ingredients can become healing remedies or practical tools.
- 03Hidden Discoveries
- Secret zones and concealed routes lead toward mysteries within the depths.
- 04Living Underground World
- Flora, fauna, monsters, traps, and environmental hazards populate the subterranean setting.
BELOW compared to similar games
Ghost of a Tale combines action-RPG exploration with stealth, disguises, and conversations in a medieval animal world, while BELOW centers on solitary survival in procedural subterranean labyrinths. Vagante also uses a dark, monster-filled adventure setting, but BELOW adds scavenging, crafting, hazards, and hidden-route discovery as core survival activities.
