Our take on Behold!
The wave-survival format keeps the focus on repeated combat encounters, leaving less room for exploration or broader adventure systems. Perks and power-ups add choices during battles, but the central activity remains fighting until survival ends.
What is Behold!?
Behold is a 2D twin-stick shooter set amid a grim magical conflict between two rival realms.
A formidable spellcaster accidentally loses focus after calling forth a monster, leaving the creature stranded between the warring forces. It battles varied foes, including infantry, armored warriors, ruthless nobles, elemental spellcasters, undead magic users, religious healers, and captive colossal beasts. The monster can fire lethal beams, crush opponents, or swallow them whole. Gameplay involves clearing successive enemy hordes, selecting perks, collecting temporary enhancements, and lasting as long as possible. The setting brings together prolonged warfare, supernatural forces, hopelessness, and graphic violence as the creature contends with both armies.
How Behold! plays
- 01Wave-Based Combat
- The game centers on destroying successive waves of enemies and surviving for as long as possible.
- 02Monster Attacks
- The playable monster can use deadly rays, smash enemies, and eat an enemy whole.
- 03Perks And Power-Ups
- Players choose perks and pick up power-ups during the fight.
- 04Fantasy Enemy Factions
- Opponents include soldiers, knights, barons, elemental mages, necromancers, clerics, and giant creatures.
Behold! compared to similar games
Behold focuses on 2D twin-stick combat, enemy waves, perks, and power-ups, while Abyssus offers multiplayer shooting through hand-crafted levels in a roguelite adventure. Abyssus also includes brine-powered weapons that can be refitted with ancient technologies, a weapon-modification system not described for Behold.
