Our take on Backseat Drivers
The defining structure is the split cockpit: one player drives without seeing the route, while the passenger sees the way forward and must direct every turn.
What is Backseat Drivers?
Backseat Drivers is a 2–4-player driving game built around divided roles.
The driver cannot see the route, while the passenger has the view and must give spoken directions. The pair travels through mountains, subway tunnels, highways and government facilities in an old car that can crash and lose parts. Vehicle components can be swapped, including unusual replacements such as a cassette tape for a missing brake pedal. The journey depends on communication, with both players responsible for interpreting directions and controlling the vehicle. A Friend Pass allows one person without the game to join a player who owns it; sessions with three or four players require at least two paid copies.
How Backseat Drivers plays
- 01Divided Driving Roles
- One player handles the vehicle while another observes the route and provides directions.
- 02Breakable Vehicle
- The car can lose components during the journey, changing how it is operated.
- 03Swappable Components
- Vehicle parts can be replaced with other objects, including improvised substitutes.
- 04Friend Pass
- One unpaid participant can join each paid player, while three- or four-player sessions need two paid copies.
