Our take on Ashen
Its defining structure is passive co-op: other players can surface during open-world exploration, with cooperation, party invitations, combat assistance, or simple non-engagement left to each encounter.
What is Ashen?
Ashen is an open-world action RPG about a wanderer seeking a place to call home.
Exploration moves through locations such as bogs, fjords, and abandoned palaces, with stamina-based combat against hostile enemies and dangerous wildlife. Players can study environments and creatures before choosing how to approach encounters. Other players may appear during exploration, allowing cooperation, party invitations, combat together, or no interaction. Survivors can be recruited to the player's town, where they contribute skills such as blacksmithing and foraging. The game also presents a narrative and musical score created with contributions from fantasy author Mark Lawrence and the band Foreign Fields.
How Ashen plays
- 01Open-world exploration
- The journey crosses varied areas, including wetlands, fjords, and old palaces, with location affecting the adventure.
- 02Passive player encounters
- Other players can appear during travel and may cooperate, join a party, fight alongside the player, or be ignored.
- 03Stamina-based combat
- Fights require preparation and observation because ordinary encounters can have severe consequences.
- 04Town survivor recruitment
- Rescued survivors can join the town and provide practical abilities such as metalworking or gathering.
- 05Collaborative story and score
- Mark Lawrence and Foreign Fields contributed to the game's narrative and music alongside developer A44.
Ashen compared to similar games
Ashen combines open-world exploration, stamina-based combat, passive player encounters, and survivor recruitment. Ghost of a Tale focuses on a mouse protagonist, stealth, disguises, and conversations in an animal-populated medieval world, while Vagante presents a dark-fantasy adventure centered on dangerous caves and questing.
