Is Ascender worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Metroidvania fans who want an open-world setting with many puzzles
- Puzzle players who also want platforming challenges
- Players interested in combining rune-based power-ups during exploration
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a combat-focused game may find the puzzle-centered structure a poor fit
- Players looking for a low-challenge experience may bounce off the stated difficulty of the puzzles and platforming
- Players who prefer linear environments may not suit an open-world game set across GOA’s districts
Our take on Ascender
The bounce point is the combined demand for puzzle solving and platforming. Players who prefer one of those activities without the other may hit a wall when the game presents its stated challenges across GOA’s districts.
What is Ascender?
Ascender is a 2D explorative puzzle metroidvania set in the open-world districts of GOA, an underground civilization.
The story follows Sky, an artificial intelligence created by Professor Toro Hudo, as it explores the world below and encounters Ocean Hudo, a limbless child who fell from the clouds as an infant. Players explore GOA’s districts, encounter unusual habitats, and solve many puzzles. Sky can equip different types of onyx runes, with each rune granting a power-up. Combining runes may produce another power-up. The game presents the history of Ocean, her father, and GOA’s civilization through an adventure centered on exploration, puzzles, and platforming challenges.
