Our take on Amatsuko
Instead of assigning progress to levels, statistics, or stored checkpoints, the game makes understanding itself the advancement system. Its open areas sit inside a largely linear journey, replacing conventional backtracking and upgrade structures with discoveries that reveal abilities and routes.
What is Amatsuko?
Amatsuko is a short knowledge-based progression game set across interconnected fantasy worlds contained within an esoteric book.
Exploration moves from an occultist island and the lands of a mysterious duke to a masquerade held by a mad king. Progress depends on understanding the systems encountered rather than improving character statistics, recording clues in a log, or loading save files. The game combines a mostly linear structure with open areas that offer multiple routes. Careful observation and experimentation reveal hidden abilities and access to new paths. Its puzzles gradually expose systems that were present from the beginning. The game is smaller and simpler than the mystery puzzle games that inspired it.
