Our take on Ys I & II Chronicles+
Rather than centering on menu-driven battles, the game uses direct-contact attacks and adds a deliberately old-school structure. Multiple soundtrack and portrait sets also let a classic adventure shift between several presentation eras.
What is Ys I & II Chronicles+?
Ys I & II Chronicles+ retells Falcom’s action RPGs from 1987 and 1988 through the journey of Adol Christin, a young swordsman who travels to Esteria after hearing reports of monsters.
The two-part adventure follows a 700-year-old mystery involving the lost land of Ys, two goddesses, and the Devil’s Tower. Combat uses contact-based attacks, with analog controller support, while Ys II adds magic and the ability to transform into a demon and speak with standard enemies. Players can choose among four difficulty levels, attempt an optional boss rush, select from three soundtrack versions, and switch between two character-art styles. The PC edition also includes adjustable high-resolution graphics, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud support, leaderboards, expanded viewing area, and alternate screen frames.
How Ys I & II Chronicles+ plays
- 01Contact-based combat
- The fighting system supports analog controls and uses direct contact with enemies instead of a dedicated attack button.
- 02Ys II magic
- The second game adds a magic system and lets Adol take demonic form to converse with ordinary enemies.
- 03Three soundtrack versions
- Music can be selected from an 1980s FM-synth arrangement, an early-2000s MIDI-style remix, or a modern studio recording.
- 04Multiple challenge settings
- Four difficulty options and a separate boss-rush mode are available.
- 05Selectable character art
- Portraits can use either a 1990s visual style or more modern anime artwork.
- 06Steam features
- The PC release includes achievements, cloud support, and leaderboards.
- 07Expanded PC presentation
- High-resolution graphics, a larger viewing area, and two types of decorative screen framing are included.
