Our take on We Are Live
The defining mechanic is spell creation: resources gathered during a run determine the abilities used in combat, letting each party develop a different approach before permadeath resets most effects.
What is We Are Live?
Create spells from resources gathered by defeating enemies, then use them to shape turn-based combat in a pixel-art JRPG roguelite.
Spells can focus on direct damage, poison effects over time, or defense. Characters have distinct specialties, while passive artifacts add effects such as multi-hit attacks and over-healing. Each run passes through four randomly generated acts built from more than 75 handcrafted rooms and includes more than 25 unique combat encounters. Permadeath keeps most progress from carrying between attempts. The game includes more than 50 artifact effects and supports an unlimited number of spell combinations. The story follows Elf, who awakens without memories in a cave and investigates the reason for her creation with clues connected to Sei.
How We Are Live plays
- 01Custom Spell Crafting
- Resources from defeated enemies can be combined into damage, poison, or defensive spells.
- 02Randomized Four-Act Runs
- Each attempt assembles four acts from a pool of more than 75 handcrafted rooms.
- 03Artifact Passives
- More than 50 passive effects include multi-hit attacks and the ability to restore health beyond its normal maximum.
- 04Specialized Party Members
- Different characters contribute distinct specialties to the class-based team.
- 05Permadeath Structure
- Most effects do not carry over between playthroughs after a run ends.
We Are Live compared to similar games
We Are Live centers on creating spells from combat resources and assembling a class-based party across four randomized acts. Shogun Showdown instead uses attack tiles, deck building, positioning, and timed attacks in its turn-based roguelike structure. Back to the Dawn focuses on prison survival, investigation, crime, and escape rather than randomized spell construction.
