Our take on WASTED
Permadeath is paired with a home that survives its owner: when one Waster dies, the shelter and its stored belongings remain available to the next character.
What is WASTED?
WASTED is a post-apocalyptic roguelike action RPG set in the Western Wastes.
Players descend through procedurally generated Coolers, searching for Booze, weapons, armor, ammunition, and other supplies while facing raiders, mutants, and traps. Irradiated drinks can grant permanent mutations through the S. H. O. T. S. system. Combat includes guns, baseball bats, explosives, and other weapons, while encounters can also be approached through stealth or by turning enemies against one another. Death permanently ends the current character, but a persistent home can retain supplies and equipment for the next Waster. The house can include workbenches, kitchens, gardens, and decorations. Trading, requests, relationships, and player choices affect the future of the Western Wastes.
How WASTED plays
- 01Permanent mutations
- Irradiated drinks grant lasting abilities through the S.H.O.T.S. character system.
- 02Generated bunker runs
- Coolers contain changing layouts, loot, traps, raiders, and mutants across their underground levels.
- 03Persistent home
- A house can retain supplies and equipment, add workbenches, kitchens, and gardens, and preserve belongings after death.
- 04Flexible encounters
- Players can use weapons, stealth, or enemy manipulation to deal with threats.
WASTED compared to similar games
WASTED combines generated underground expeditions, permanent character death, mutation-based progression, and home development. Ghost of a Tale is also an action RPG, but focuses on a mouse's medieval adventure, exploration, stealth, disguises, and conversations rather than WASTED's wasteland scavenging and mutation system. Blood West centers on an undead gunslinger in an eldritch Wild West and is described as a stealth FPS, while WASTED offers multiple approaches and a persistent home.
