Our take on VARLET
Players may bounce off when relationship management becomes complicated: growing close to multiple people can create problems. Others may hit a wall when Triad Stats begin affecting dialogue options and passive battle-skill power, making choices part of both story and combat progression.
What is VARLET?
VARLET is a school-life RPG set at Kousei Academy, where the recently transferred protagonist discovers a hidden world called a Glitch.
Strange creatures have replaced several people, and the protagonist must fight alongside friends to protect the school. As a member of Student Support Services, players address other students’ problems, spend time with friends after school, and build relationships through events. Battles use a Timeline Command system with two approaches: supporting allies as a Leader or using stronger skills as a Ruler. Choices and analyses alter six Triad Stats covering morality, sympathy, altruism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. These stats can open additional dialogue options and increase passive battle-skill power.
How VARLET plays
- 01School-life activities
- Student Support Services assignments and after-school events develop relationships with other students.
- 02Glitch investigation
- The protagonist enters an alternate world within the academy after discovering that people have been replaced by monsters.
- 03Two battle roles
- The Timeline Command system supports ally-focused Leader play and high-power Ruler abilities.
- 04Triad statistics
- Six personality-related stats affect available dialogue choices and passive combat skills.
VARLET compared to similar games
VARLET combines academy life, relationship events, personality-driven dialogue, and Timeline Command battles. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on exploring a strange and dangerous city, while Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating crime and escaping a maximum-security prison. VARLET therefore places its RPG progression within school routines and a hidden academy world rather than those exploration and prison-escape settings.
