Our take on Urge
Rather than treating the environment as a fixed backdrop, the game makes player actions part of its changing hazard. Combat and travel can raise the fog, so routine survival choices also affect the threats that follow.
What is Urge?
After surviving a car crash, players enter a wasteland shaped by a mysterious drug and inhabited by monsters.
Actions can raise a hazardous fog, bringing special enemies and physical dangers while speeding up the player's urge. Combat choices have trade-offs: striking an enemy in its substance-filled head may be easier but can increase the fog. Players can roam between towns or settle in one place, chop trees for a base, reinforce abandoned houses with plywood, and set traps. Firearms, melee weapons, and throwables provide combat options. Exploration includes searching for supplies, combining items, building, and using vehicles to travel between towns.
How Urge plays
- 01Reactive hazardous fog
- Some actions raise its level, bringing special enemies and physical hazards while speeding up the player's urge.
- 02Base construction
- Players can cut trees for a larger structure or use found plywood to fortify an abandoned house.
- 03Vehicle travel
- Vehicles can be found and fueled for travel between towns, with that fuel also spreading the fog.
- 04Combat options
- Firearms, close-range weapons, and throwables can be used against hostile people and creatures.
Urge compared to similar games
Mr. Prepper centers on preparing for nuclear war by building an underground shelter, while Urge ties survival pressure to a fog that can rise from player actions. Unplagued focuses on purging a plague in medieval villages with up to 4 companions; Urge instead combines survival choices with base building, scavenging, and travel between towns.
