Our take on Under The Mask
The mask requirement narrows build flexibility: every battle must preserve at least one equipped mask, so experiments that leave the character unmasked are not part of the design.
What is Under The Mask?
Under The Mask is a mask-themed deck-building game about a returnee from the underworld whose soul inhabits a mask.
Each round, players choose masks, encounter events, and build a stronger set of abilities within a limited number of steps. Tarot cards can reveal stronger masks, while a priestess can enchant them and prayer can add power. Masks that break during battles produce ability fragments such as dodging, revival, and improved accuracy. These fragments can be combined in a furnace to create masks with multiple abilities. During battles, at least one mask must remain equipped. Collected masks are used against the final enemy at the end of the run.
How Under The Mask plays
- 01Mask Deck Building
- Each round allows one mask to be retained from several options, with tarot cards offering additional mask choices.
- 02Mask Upgrades
- A priestess, prayer, and faith-based evolution provide several ways to develop masks, including transformations such as Crow into Plague Doctor.
- 03Ability Fragments
- Broken masks yield fragments linked to effects including dodge, revival, and accuracy.
- 04Ability Fusion
- The furnace combines collected fragments into masks carrying multiple abilities.
- 05Mask Requirement
- Battles require at least one mask to stay equipped.
Under The Mask compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also combines turn-based combat with deck building and upgrades, but it centers on positioning, attack tiles, and timing attacks against the Shogun. Under The Mask instead focuses on collecting masks, combining ability fragments, and managing masks through events and upgrades. Men of War: Assault Squad uses large-scale World War II battles and direct control of military units rather than mask-based deck construction.
