Our take on They Are Coming
The game gains a direct, repeatable combat loop by keeping its mechanics simple, but that focus leaves less room for narrative development and broader exploration. The death penalty also makes experimentation riskier in Defense mode, while Playground mode separates testing from the main survival pressure.
What is They Are Coming?
This hybrid side-scrolling shooter combines roguelike progression, tower defense, and base construction.
In Defense mode, a survivor protects an orphanage and younger siblings from daily zombie hordes. Weapons and tools are obtained from the administrator before each fight, then used alongside constructed defenses during successive waves. Death carries a severe cost because progress and collected items can be lost. Playground mode provides access to unlocked items without the usual death threat, allowing players to arrange defenses and test combinations against zombies. The game includes firearms, close-range weapons, ragdoll effects, graphic kills, and a customizable playground. Its structure centers on repeated preparation, combat, and experimentation across two modes.
How They Are Coming plays

- Defense focuses on protecting the orphanage during escalating attacks, while Playground removes the normal death threat for experimentation.
- 02Defensive Construction
- Players place and arrange defenses around the orphanage before confronting incoming zombie waves.
- 03Weapon Variety
- The arsenal includes guns and melee equipment purchased from the orphanage administrator.
- 04Custom Playground
- Unlocked items can be used to create defensive setups and test them against zombies.
- 05Ragdoll Combat
- Fights include physics-driven enemy bodies and graphic kill effects.
